Before You Load or Unload

Restricted & Special-Handling Items

Some materials are accepted only with proper preparation, inspection, photo ID, proof of ownership, or manager approval. Other items may be downgraded or refused for safety, environmental, or legal reasons. Call us before loading restricted or unusual material.

Important: This guide helps you prepare, but it does not guarantee acceptance. Final acceptance depends on condition, contamination, quantity, documentation, and safe handling.

How JMR Classifies Special Items

This page helps public customers, contractors, and small commercial sellers understand what needs extra preparation, what may require documentation, and what should stay off the truck.

Conditionally Accepted

Accepted only with prep or proof

Items like A/C units, compressors, catalytic converters, more than two lead-acid batteries, and some restricted property may require documentation or special handling.

Non-Conforming

May be re-sorted, downgraded, or refused

Loads mixed with trash, wood, dirt, batteries, aerosol cans, lamps, or free liquids may be refused, returned, re-sorted, or downgraded.

Not Accepted

Do not bring these items

Hazardous, radioactive, explosive, or biohazard materials are not accepted at the yard.

Prepare before you arrive

Restricted material should be separated, visible for inspection, and safe to handle. Sealed containers, unknown liquids, and suspicious property can delay your load or stop acceptance entirely.

Common documentation requests

  • Valid photo ID
  • Proof of ownership or job authorization
  • Photos or supporting paperwork for unusual items

All loads are subject to inspection at intake.

Radioactive or radiation-suspect items Not Accepted Requires specialized handling and disposal outside of normal scrap intake.
Fuel, solvents, paint residue, or hazardous liquids Not Accepted Containers must be empty, clean, dry, and safe before any metal container can be received.
Sealed cylinders or pressurized containers Not Accepted Do not bring sealed or pressurized containers to the yard.
Open, empty drums, cleaned metal containers, and depressurized cylinders Conditionally Accepted Must be empty, dry, open for inspection, and safe to handle. Prior hazardous use may require additional review. Cylinders must be cut open or otherwise made fully visible for inspection before unloading.
Closed-top drums or dirty containers Non-Conforming Bring containers empty, dry, and open for inspection or they may be refused.
Depressurized cylinders rendered safe Conditionally Accepted Must be empty, depressurized, valve removed, and approved before unloading.
Refrigerators, freezers, A/C units, and compressors Conditionally Accepted Refrigerant handling requirements apply. Call ahead if you are unsure whether the unit has been properly prepared.
Detached catalytic converters Conditionally Accepted Seller ID, proof of ownership, and legal review may be required before purchase.
A/C coils, utility wire, water meters, signs, grates, kegs, and shopping carts Conditionally Accepted Proof of ownership, job authorization, or additional review may be required.
Lead-acid batteries Conditionally Accepted Keep separate from other scrap. More than two lead-acid batteries per person per day may require proof of ownership or additional documentation.
Rechargeable batteries Non-Conforming Must be separated for proper handling and may not be accepted mixed into scrap loads.
Mixed metal loads with trash, wood, dirt, concrete, tires, or free liquids Non-Conforming May be downgraded, re-sorted, returned, or refused depending on contamination level.

Helpful Before You Come

  • Separate metal from trash and non-metal debris.
  • Do not bring sealed tanks, cylinders, or anything with unknown liquid inside.
  • Bring photo ID for restricted or special-review items.
  • For unusual items, call first or send a photo before loading.

Common Reasons Loads Get Delayed or Rejected

  • Mixed batteries, aerosol cans, or lamps buried inside scrap.
  • Dirty drums or containers that are not open for inspection.
  • Restricted property without proof of ownership.
  • Appliances or equipment that still require safe fluid or refrigerant handling.
